
Americans are legitimately angry for all sorts of reasons. We regularly advocate for policies that would actively hurt someone else or put their livelihoods at risk. Politicians have rarely kept promises. Sometimes I feel like burning it all down.

But I don’t.

I don’t want utter chaos, a civil war, the deaths of millions. That’s what we get if we burn it all down.

I’d rather end up with a complicated and contested public square with functioning systems of public intervention – free, fair, and accessible elections, fair legal systems, and equally protected rights. And I’d rather put up with collaborating with people I disagree with on some things to make sure we can protect this shared vision.
