The Challenge

Leading with values is not enough when values collide.

What happens when Trusting Grantees seems at odds with Accountability? Or when Collaboration clashes with the Urgency of Now?

In today’s polarized environment, these conflicts can stall strategy, paralyze boards, and damage public trust. The difference between impact and failure often comes down to one underdeveloped skill: the ability to navigate values conflict.

02

Why It Matters

Without this skill:

  • Partnerships collapse over values misunderstandings.

  • Boards become paralyzed, unable to act decisively.

  • Reputational risks escalate, leading to cautious choices that undermine mission.

Real-world examples:

  • A funder refused to partner with faith-based climate grantees because of their right-to-life stance. Without conservative support, policy proposals failed.

  • A racial equity grantee couldn’t reach communities of color because their values clashed with local faith institutions.
